TTT: Quotes That Warm Us

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme by The Broke And The Bookish.

We read children’s books, they are basically made to melt your heart!

(Pooh’s Little Instruction Book, I just like the picture too)

  1. I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you – especially when you are near me, as now: it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string situated in the corresponding quarter of your little frame. And if that boisterous channel, and two hundred miles or so of land some broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapt; and then I’ve a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly. – Jane Eyre
  2. I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things. – LOTR
  3. “One day I gave Clifford a bath. And I combed his hair and took hom to the dog show. I’d like to say Clifford won first prize…but he didn’t. I don’t care. You can keep all your small dogs. You can keep all your black, white, brown, and spotted dogs. I’ll keep Clifford…Wouldn’t you?” – Clifford the Big Red Dog
  4. This one is because I’m a new Mom:

“When they’ve finished reading, Olivia’s mother gives her a kiss and says, ‘You know, you really wear me out. But I love you anyway.’

And Olivia gives her a kiss back and says, ‘I love you anyway too.'”

The quotes that warm me range from things that never fail to comfort me, to quotes that always make me laugh– even if it’s the fifty-seventh time I’m reading it:

  1. “Don’t waste time blaming yourself when you can spend time planning how to destroy our enemies.” — Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan
  2. “What are you doing?” Angela complained. “Are you trying to make me jog? You know I think people who jog should be shot at midday.”
“Why at midday?” Kami asked absently.
“There’s no need to ever get up at dawn,” Angela told her. “Not even to shoot joggers.” — Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan. (Yes, she comes twice on this list because she always makes me laugh. Also, Angela is me and I am Angela.)
  3. “I am still writing my way toward a place where I fit.” — Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay
  4. “I would not have you descend into your own dream. I would have you be a conscious citizen of this terrible and beautiful world.” — Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
  5. “bloom beautifully / dangerously / loudly / bloom softly / however you need / just bloom” — milk and honey by Rupi Kaur

Nooooo you cannot DO this to me! How can I, who love to quote, possibly find all the wonderful words I would love to bring forth for this when all my books are in boxes?

  1. “She died a famous woman denying / her wounds / denying / her wounds came from the same source as her power.” – from by Adrienne Rich’s “Power,” a poem about Marie Curie.
  2. “My hand delights to trace unusual things, / and deviates from the known and common way, / nor will on fading silks compose / faintly the inimitable rose.” – Anne Finch, as quoted by Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own.
  3. “I read like the flame reads the wood.” – Alfred Doblin.
  4. “Too many women waste their lives grieving because they do not have something other people tell them they should want.” – Lady Callandra in The Face of a Stranger by Anne Perry.
  5. “It is the nature of the artist to mind excessively what is said about him. Literature is strewn with the wreckage of men who have minded beyond reason the opinions of others.” Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own.
  6. “‘Aren’t you the silly one?’ said the minstrel. ‘Didn’t I say I’d be back?’ And he took Lucky’s collar and lead from his pouch where he had carried them for a year, and more.” – from The Minstrel and the Dragon Pup by Rosemary Sutcliff
  7. “I assure you, my friends, I am cone sold stober.” – Howl, in Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones.
  8. “If I am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make my mind up for me.” – Eugenides in The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner.

  1. We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect. -:-Anais Nin-:-
  2. “We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”
Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
  3. “As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.”
    Henry David Thoreau, Walden
  4. “For sometimes you can’t help but crave some ruin in what you love.”
Chang-rae Lee, On Such a Full Sea
  5. “I want to do with you what spring does with cherry trees.”
    Pablo Neruda
